Getting Married in Chiddingly or East Hoathly Churches

We have many enquiries each year about the possibility of getting married here in one of our churches. We would be delighted to talk about you marrying here if you can show:-

That one of you:

  • has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
  • was baptised in the parish concerned or
  • was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
  • has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or

That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

  • has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
  • has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or

That one of your parents or grandparents:

  • was married in the parish

If you have no connection here already but still want to marry here this may still be possible but you must establish a connection by worshipping here for at least 6 months and experience has shown that this is sometimes unrealistic. Please discuss it with Phil Hodgins.

If either of you is divorced with a former spouse please discuss this with Phil Hodgins – we take seriously the teaching of the Church about the lifelong nature of marriage but there are circumstances where a marriage service may still be possible. We are also normally able to offer a Service of Prayer and Dedication following a Civil marriage.

Some practical information

Legal matters

The legal preliminaries for your wedding will be discussed with you in good time for the wedding.

What sort of service?

There are a small number of marriage services which are authorised for use in the Church of England. We will be happy to discuss these with you if you wish and you can look at them on the Church of England web site. www.cofe.anglican.org Once the basic framework of the service is decided on we work with couples to personalise this through their choice of Readings, Hymns etc.

Seating Capacity

The Churches can seat people as follows:

Chiddingly: The church is a relatively small building and 125 is a realistic maximum for seating. There is the potential for a very limited amount of standing room, so if you are thinking of inviting this sort of numbers to the service it is important to discuss it with the priest.

East Hoathly: will seat up to about 250 although it is possible to increase the seating a little. Again, if you are thinking of inviting this sort of number please discuss it with the priest.
